How do You Measure a Ceiling Fan?
- Stop the Fan: Make sure the fan is off before taking any measurements.
- Use a Ladder: Use a ladder to get to the ceiling fan if necessary. As an alternative, you may disassemble it to make measuring simpler.
- Use a Measuring Tape:
- Measure the distance between two opposing blade tips for fans with an even number of blades.
- Measure the distance between the tip of one blade and the ceiling fan’s center for fans with an odd number of blades, then multiply the result by two.
- Calculate the Blade Span:
- In the case of even blades, the blade span is the measured distance.
- To find the blade span for odd-shaped blades, multiply the measured value by two.
- Label the Measured Ceiling Size.
As an alternative, you can estimate the fan size using the measurements of the room:
- Determine the width and length of the space.
- To find the square footage of the room, multiply them all together.
- Choose a ceiling fan size based on the room area:
- Fans with a blade span of 29 to 36 inches are suitable for rooms up to 75 square feet.
- Fans with at least a 50-inch blade spread are suitable for larger rooms.
