The Factual Folklore Tale of Baqir Khani
If you have consumed baqar khani, you should be aware of its modern past.
It is said that once upon a time in Lucknow, there was a beautiful prostitute named Khani Begum. Not only for her beauty but also for her demeanor, she was considered a popular figure in Lucknow. During this period, prominent prostitutes did not engage in prostitution, only dance and song concerts were held. Nobles and Nawabs used to send their children to these prostitutes to learn manners.
Khani Begum had several boyfriends who were not only enamored with her beauty but also desired to marry her. Many Nawabs wanted to accommodate him in their private apartments. Among them was Baqir Ali Khan, who claimed to be madly in love with Khani Begum, and his contemporary, Nawab Juman Khan, was also a hostage of Khani Begum. Both Nawabs expected Khani Begum to make a decision in their favor. Khani Begum also understood that, amid so many lovers, the two Nawabs listed above were her true suitors, but before she could choose between them, someone murdered Khani Begum in the darkness of her room. The murder inquiry was quickly concluded when it was revealed that one of her failed boyfriends had committed the crime and fled. The world of Nawab Juman and Nawab Baqir Ali Khan has been devastated.
Nawab Juman, on the other hand, quickly became absorbed in other engagements, while Nawab Baqir Ali Khan remained secluded to his palace. They did not go anywhere or meet anybody. Only Khani Begum remembers the entire day. Finally, one day, one of his disgruntled friends came to meet him at the mansion and was very angry seeing his condition. He brought him to the bazaar of Oudh by giving him the link of his friendship.
Every day in this glorious age of Oudh, when the customs and needs of the Nawabs’ various interests were met, a new meal was undoubtedly made. Baker used to make it and then abandon it as soon as he did not like it. Al-Qahir Nawab Baqir Ali Khan’s companions brought him to a well-known baker in Oudh and urged him to bring something unique.
The baker most likely recognized where Nawab Baqir Ali Khan would find a common taste, so he promptly brought his latest product to him. Baqir Ali Khan cut off a morsel and popped it into his lips. For a moment, he felt as if a spring of flavors had come into his mouth. He immediately called for the baker who made it. The poor baker thought that he would be headed today because he did not even know the taste of the bread he had made for the first time.Baker was afraid and went in front of Baqir Ali Khan, so he asked him that you have made this bread.?
Baqir Ali Khan asked what its name was. Now the baker panicked that there must be something wrong with the bread when they were asking his name. He folded his hands and told them that he had made this bread in a new way and had not thought of its name yet before presenting it to Sir Baqir Ali Khan. If Sir Baqir does not like this cuisine, I will never make it again.
Then Baqir Ali told the baker that he liked this bread so much that he wanted to know its name. The baker was so happy to hear this that he requested the Nawab himself to give a name to this bread. Then Nawab Baqir Ali Khan said to his friend and this royal baker that the name of whom we loved was Khani and ours is Baqir. If we could not meet in life, why not name this bread “Baqir Khani”. Whenever and wherever this bread is eaten in the world, people will speak our name together. What came out of the mouth of Nawab Baqir Ali Khan was immediately accepted.
Thus, the bread made in this way is still eaten in Pakistan and India today, with many variations and different forms, and the names Baqir and Khani are inevitably associated together.
